Eye On Springfield with Jason Cantu of Slaves BC

eye on springfield

Jason Cantu, bassist of blackened hardcore band Slaves BC, is one of my favorite people I follow on Twitter. He retweets and posts lots of weird and cool Simpsons and metal crossover stuff like these pedals. He actually turned me on to the band Dr. Colossus and posted this picture of what is hands down the best back patch of all time:

Jason is a great guy from a great band that everyone reading this should check out!

What is your history with The Simpsons? Do you remember the first time you saw the show?
I don’t remember my first time but I do remember watching some of the Tracey Ullman Show. Didn’t understand it but I watched it haha.

There is a pretty large cast of characters on The Simpsons. Is there a character you relate to the most?
Every one has their own distinct charm. I think everyone can relate to a piece of every character. Can’t pick one. I do collect records and talk about music like Jeff Albertson aka Comic Book Guy though. Worst. Answer. Ever.

Who is your favorite character?
Quite possibly Ralph. He’s just so innocent and unpossibly dumb.

Do you have a favorite episode(s)?
So many. Especially all of the Treehouse Of Horrors. One that is always in the back of my mind is “Homer’s Enemy”. Frank Grimes aka Grimey, as he liked to be called, just gets so pissed.

Based on your twitter feed, you seem like a pretty big fan of animation in general. Is there a show you would like to see crossover with The Simpsons like Futurama and Family Guy did?
Not a big fan of the crossover episodes but they are still enjoyable. I’ve been watching a lot of Animation Domination on FXX which consists of the shows Lucas Bros. Moving Co., Stone Quakers, Major Lazer, Axe Cop, and High School USA. Great stuff to watch when you’re high. Still great if you don’t.
With all that said, I’d like to see Otto Mann hang and party with the Lucas Bros. Maybe they can smoke, show each other music and expose each other to stuff they wouldn’t normally do.
Shout out to Whitmer Thomas from the Power Violence comedy collective and Stone Quakers crew. That “Blue Feathers” episode homage to David Lynch’s Blue Velvet was on another level of genius. You guys are more than welcome to use any Slaves BC song any time you want.

Has the Simpsons ever introduced you to an idea that has changed the way you viewed things? (Like Lisa going vegetarian or Barney quitting drinking?)
Not really but I did appreciate Bart’s putting zen. I normally can’t stand Lisa but she shares some decent knowledge every now and then.

I’m a big fan of the Planet Of The Apes musical number with Troy McClure. Do you have a favorite musical number from the show?
“See My Vest” is a fucking classic. I’d buy a 7″ of that and probably play it at 33 1/3 rpm.

Who is your favorite guest star from the show?
So many good ones. Going to go with Jon Lovitz. All of his guest spots are great, especially the one scene where all of his characters were in the same room.

Who from the world of metal would you love to see guest on the show?
Venom would be sweet. Would love to see something with a black metal band like Darkthrone. I think the writers should just let Neill Jameson from Krieg take charge of an episode. That guy writes comedy gold every day.

Do you still watch the show? If not, do you remember what made you stop watching?
I watch reruns everyday. Still watch new episodes when I can. The great thing about The Simpsons are obscure references you don’t catch until years later.

Do you have an idea on how you would like to see the series end?

I’m a sucker for happy endings. I hope they inherit Mr Burns’ money and buy the Duff factory and stadium. So much love for that show and all of it’s colorful characters.
It’s been a good run and has the potential to go on forever. Pretty much the only other decent cartoon that involves current events is South Park.
I will miss it dearly and will continue to watch reruns until my own cancellation. *drinks glass of malk*
